I have worked in numerous strategic roles and used different skills but when I reflected long and hard about what I was really good at it came down to one word - translating. I strongly believe that without the ability to self-analyse and evolve it is difficult to ask and expect others to do so. Having gone through the process myself I had to be clear about what I was offering.
Gerald Manning, an Environment Agency Board member once said to me - 'that wasn't what I said but was exactly what I meant to say!' The art of translation is taking the essence of what is said and describing it in a way that makes sense to those who said it and those that need to know. Often, the message is clouded by jargon, management-speak or technical language.
